Description

The Physiological Testing, Analysis and Programming (PTAP) Certification is a comprehensive education series built to provide fitness and health professionals with the knowledge and experience required to fully harness the many benefits of physiological testing. The series consists of the Foundations, Advanced and Expert certifications.

The Foundations Certification (>22 hours of education) is valuable to all fitness and medical professionals, performance coaches or individuals who are interested in expanding their knowledge. By understanding how to effectively collect and accurately analyse and interpret physiological data, you will be able to build robust and customised training and nutrition programs tailored to minimise your clientele's physiological limitations while efficiently and effectively helping them achieve their goals. We will focus on:

  • Human physiology specific to metabolic testing
  • Substrate/energy systems used to create ATP
  • Testing processes (RMR and VO2max) including client preparation, modality and protocol selection, and parameter setting
  • Advanced data analysis and interpretation
  • Identification of cardiovascular, metabolic and respiratory limitations
  • Zoning options
  • How to create limitation and goal specific exercise and nutrition programming
  • How to monetise physiological testing into your business

The program is highly applicable for those within the health, longevity and performance sectors whether working with medical, general or athletic populations. We will employ the KORR CardioCoach metabolic analyser, but rest assured the program can easily be applied to any metabolic analyser (PNOE, VO2master, Cosmed, SpiroFit etc.).

In addition to the online course programming, weekly or biweekly (depending on attendance) video calls will be coordinated in which to support the course material.

*You do not need to own an analyser to complete the certification. It is perfect for those who wish to learn about physiological testing prior to investing in a device.

Learning Objectives

  • Review the primary functions of the respiratory, cardiovascular, and metabolic systems related to RMR and VO2 testing
  • Review the different energy systems related to ATP production
  • Understand the complex system interactions and their impact on function and performance
  • Differentiate between testing and assessment to ensure the appropriate tool is used for each client
  • Understand protocol selection and parameter setting
  • Ensuring test validity and clean data
  • Clarify terminology used in physiological testing
  • In-depth review of how to use metabolic analysis to identify systemic limitations and different zoning methods
  • When, why and how to apply effective individualised limitation specific exercise programming based upon a variety of health or fitness goals
  • How to apply RMR and VO2max data to aid in nutrition planning

Course Procedure

There are four modules - Foundations in Exercise Physiology, Testing, Analysis and Programming.

The modules are lockstep. You must pass each module exam to move onto the next module. Exams for Module I-III are multiple choice. Module IV exam is case study based testing your application of the theory taught throughout the course.

Foundations Certification Modules

Module I – Foundations in Exercise Physiology - 4.8 hours
  • Review the cardiovascular, metabolic and respiratory systems related to metabolic analysis (RMR and VO2 testing)
  • Learn the complex interactions of these systems
  • Review the energy systems related to ATP production (beta oxidation, Krebs cycle, electron transport chain, lactate shuttle, glycolysis, creatine phosphate)
  • Ensure that we are all using the same terminology and understanding of these systems for future lessons
Module II – Testing - 4.2 hours
  • Testing vs. Assessment
  • Client preparation
  • Test modality selection
  • Test protocol options
    • Ramp vs. Step vs. x/1/x, vs endurance testing
    • Population specific protocol selection
  • Setting protocol parameters to maximise your testing goals
  • RMR/VO2 procedures
Module III – Data Analysis - 6.2 hours
  • How to know if your test is usable
  • Selecting the right RMR analysis method
  • Analysing RMR data
  • Analysing VO2 test data - it's not just VO2max
  • Identifying systemic limitations (cardiovascular vs. metabolic vs. respiratory) using ALL the data available with metabolic analysis
  • Trends vs. thresholds
  • Efficiency and output analysis
  • Zoning
    • Zoning methods review
    • What are the options and their strengths/weaknesses
    • Manual zoning
Module IV – Programming - 7.6 hours
  • Training types and effects
  • Goal setting and training history
  • Cardio and interval training
  • Resistance training
  • Using RMR and VO2 data to aid in nutrition recommendations
